Feby. 1st. 1755.
Sir
Your agreeable Letr. of the 9th. Janry. I did not receive till the 27th. The 5000£ your Assembly has given for aid to the Expeditn. I find is left to You either to Supply in Men or Proviss. In my last I wrote You if You sent a Compa. in 400, lbs good Pork will be very acceptable, as also a Qu[anti]ty of Bacon as that is easy Carriage on Horses, & in the Mos. of May or June some Beeves to be drove from Your Colony to the Camp will be very agreeable, as by that Time the Salt provisions will be mostly exhausted. The two regimts. that are expected are to be augmentd. from 500 to 700 Men each I have accordingly ordered the officers to recv it for them agreeable to Instructns. I have in our News Paper offered the Encouragement that is propos'd for the People that enlist in these Regimts. but I fear shall not be able to get the No. wanted, if deficient they must be supplied from our other Men raised for this Colony. I think for the prest. 50 Men from You with Proviss. is as much as can be expected from your Fund, & if You please to send them by Water to Alexa[ndri]a. on Poto[mac] River. I sent You a Packet from Londo. to the Care of Mr. Watson at Suffolk, since that we have no News from Londo. or any more from over the Ohio than what I formerly wrote You. I have ordered all our Forces to W.C: for fear this fine open Winter, the Fr. on the Ohio may have Intelligence of the Supplies we expect, and endeavour to make an Attempt on our Camp where there is only the three Indt. Companies. Your President cannot expect more than half the Salary & Perquisites from the Time of your being appointed. I think his Mty's Instructs. on that Head are very explicit & indeed the Salary of your Predecessor on the former Establishmt. was so ill pd. that the Presidt. accounting for half the Perquisites may be a proper Settlemt.. When Sir Wm. Gooch left this he made a particular agreemt. with the then Presidt. & as I was only four Months from my Appointmt. till my Arrival I did not insist on any Part of the Perquisites, as Sir Wm's Agent had settled with the President a Mo. before my Arrival. I think You have a right from the Date of your Com[missi]o[n]. Ld. Albemarle & myself are on an Agreemt. to pay him so much Yearly. We all join in kind respects to Your Son & Nephew & be assur'd I remr. in great Truth
Your Ex’s m. o. h. s.
