John Coneway was an American Indian man of an unknown tribal origin. Enslaved by John Blish in April 1713, by June 1713 Coneway was enslaved by Richard Sanderson. Although the circumstances of how Coneway came to be enslaved by Sanderson are unclear, one likely explanation is that Blish had placed Coneway on a ship bound for New England, where Blish intended to sett him. However, Coneway escaped from the ship, possibly when it wrecked or otherwise ran aground and after a short time Coneway was captured by Richard Sanderson. When Sanderson refused to relinquish Coneway, Blish sued Sanderson in the North Carolina court. Any further information about John Coneway has not been located.
