George Tayloe Winston was born in Windsor (Bertie County), North Carolina, on October 12, 1852. Winston was a lifelong educator who served as the seventh president of the University of North Carolina (1891-1896), the first president of the University of Texas (1896-1899), and president of North Carolina State University (1899-1908). He died in Durham (Durham County) on August 26, 1932.
