Dear General,
North Carolina has been too neglectful of the memory of her great men. Her greatest scientist, one of America's [greatest?] scientists, lies in an unmarked grave on the summit of the highest mountain west of the Mississippi. Beside that grave shd be erected an obelisk shaft 150 to 200 ft high (like Washingtons Mnt) commanding wide views from summit and visible 100 miles from all directions. Such monument wd last forever, would be seen and honored by all men, wd bring glory & credit to N.C. It would cost $25,000 to $30,000. I have in hand & in right $5,000. There is $10,000 of state funds wh. I am sure we can get. I would like for you to take charge of this great enterprise & raise the [illegible] $10,000. You as President of the University Alumni Assn and the [illegible] [illegible] of her sons and the most [illegible] to alma mater.
Elisha Mitchell was professor in the University of 40 years and lost his life while fixing the height of the Mountain The University owes him this monument, the State owes it, the Alumni owe it. As the leading Alumnus & the Head of the Alumni Assn you are the man to put it through.
Yours &c
L. C. (Governor)
