Hon. Clement Manly,
Winston-Salem, N.C.
My dear Mr. Manly:
As you know, I am and have been greatly interested in the establishment of the State Park on Mitchell's Peak. I enclose you herewith a pamphlet I have prepared.
My object was first, to emphasize the fact that we have the highest mountain in eastern North America; and second, to secure funds to erect a monument to Dr. Mitchell on the summit.
The establishment of the State Park makes this an opportune time for exciting interest in this subject. With proper publicity I believe that Mitchell's Peak will be one of the chief magnates of the western part of our state. It will attract thousands of visitors, and contribute immensely to our tourist travel.
The Southern Railway will derive a larger benefit than any other industry.
The monument on the summit should be constructed so that people can ascend to the top of it, and thereby command to better advantage the magnificent view. It would add much to the attractiveness of the mountain. It cannot be erected unless people who will profit by it will substantially contribute.
The Southern Railway has manifested an interest in the development of our country which we all very much appreciate. The thought has occurred to me that it would contribute a good sum toward the erection of this monument, and that it would be making a good investment.
Mr. Fairfax Harrison is a broad-minded man, of fine conception for the future of his company, and of the territory that it serves. I have hoped that he will be interested in this proposition, and this letter is to ask you to ascertain from him, or from the proper authority, if the Southern Railway will aid in the construction of the monument on the summit.
I will be very much obliged to you if you will do this. If the Southern Railway and others interested will make a substantial beginning, the monument can be built. The state cannot be expected to do it, and it will hardly be feasible by popular subscription alone.
I hope that you and Mrs. Manly are enjoying the holidays, and that the New Year will bring you its full measure of success and happiness.
Your friend
