Boyd Ruffin Trollinger was born on May 4, 1887, in Graham, North Carolina. In 1920, Trollinger provided testimony in an investigation into an attempted lynching in Graham. At the time, Trollinger was the night-time police officer for the town. Later in life, he served as chief of police in Burlington until his death there on January 6, 1932.
