Biographical Description

Merritt Dilliard was born in North Carolina around 1778. Dilliard worked variously as a ranger, stage coach line operator, and farmer. For a time in the 1830s, he served as an "overseer" at the state quarry, an operation that contributed the stone for the construction of the state capitol. Dilliard later relocated to Mississippi, where it seems he died around 1859.
