Bartholomew Figures Moore was born in Halifax County, North Carolina on January 29, 1801. A lawyer, he represented Halifax during multiple terms in the North Carolina General Assembly from 1836 to 1844. In 1848 he moved to Raleigh and became the state's attorney general, serving through 1851. In 1858 he served as a witness for his neighbor Mary R. Wheaton's will. An opponent of succession, he refused to swear an oath to the Confederate government during the Civil War and helped revise the state's codes and laws during Reconstruction. He died in Raleigh on November 27, 1878.
