Daniel Morgan was born in Hunterdon County, NewJersey in about 1736. He moved to Virginia as a young man and served as an ensign for the British Army during the French and Indian War. Morgan later was commissioned as an officer during the American Revolution and raised a troop of men from Virginia. He distinguished himself at the Battle of Quebec and later at the Battle of Saratoga. In 1780 he joined the Southern Campaign at Hillsborough, North Carolina, where he became a brigadier general. In January 1781 he led his troops to a decisive victory at the Battle of Cowpens and later retired to his farm in Virginia. He died in Winchester, Virginia on July 6, 1802.
