Duncan Elizabeth McNair was born in Robeson County, North Carolina on 11 December 1831. After graduating the University of North Carolina, he became an engineer on the Wilmington and Rutherford Railroad. He later served as a lieutenant in the 3rd Regiment, North Carolina Troops and was killed at the Battle of Sharpsburg in Sharpsburg, Maryland on 17 September 1862.
