William Harvey McMurray was born in Lancaster County, South Carolina on October 29, 1883. After graduating from the University of South Carolina, he moved to Black Mountain in 1912, where he owned an animal feed and hardware store. During the Great Depression he started working as a car salesman and later owned a Chevrolet dealership in Black Mountain. He died in Swannanoa on June 30, 1972.
