Eliza North Grant (née Mitchell) was born in Chapel Hill (Orange County), North Carolina, on May 26, 1833. Grant ran the Statesville Female College with her sister Margaret Eliot Mitchell from 1875 until her death in Statesville (Iredell County) on January 7, 1883. She was a daughter of geologist, educator, and explorer Elisha Mitchell.
