Biographical Description

In 1774 Sarah Matthews signed a nonimportation agreement that later became known as the Edenton Tea Party Resolves. No other records mentioning a Sarah Matthews within the vicinity of Chowan County, North Carolina have been located. It is possible that her last name was Mathias, a family name in nearby Perquimans County, but there is not enough evidence to make a positive identification.
