Ira May Hardy was born in La Grange (Lenoir County), North Carolina on July 22, 1874. Hardy was a physician who served as founder and first superintendent of the Caswell Training School (formerly the State School for the Feeble Minded) and as president of the North Carolina Medical Society. He died in Kinston on November 21, 1948.
