Mr. Marcus Erwin,
Asheville, N.C.

My dear Mark:-

I have received letters from you, Zeb Weaver, Ed. Swain and Millard Roberts applying for a position for Millard Roberts.

You must remind the boys up there what I have already done for Buncombe County. I have given the following places to Buncombe: Col. J. P. Kerr, General L. W. Young, and Miss May Jones in place of Garland Thomasson, besides a number of directors and appointments in the National Guard. I think that I can get a place for Harve Brittain, but I cannot give all the applicants in Buncombe a position. In the first place there are not enough places to go around, and in the next place other sections of the state would have a right to complain. If I get Harve Brittain a place, could it be arranged so that Millard Roberts could get some position with the commissioners in Buncombe? If Millard had experience in road building and in the management of convicts, I could probably give him a place, but he has not.

I have in my hand now a most urgent [illegible] from Zeb Vance. I do not know what I can do. As you know, I am always anxious to do my very best for the men that have fought with us so long and so faithfully. If I see any opportunity for Millard or for Zeb Vance, I will take advantage of it.

I expect to speak in Old Fort on May 3rd, and will go to Asheville that night to remain for a day or two.

Your friend,
