Col. Sandord H. Cohen,
Asheville, N.C.
My dear Colonel Cohen:
I enclose you a copy of the statement that I have made to the newspapers1 as to the Mount Mitchell monument. This monument will probably cost ten or twenty thousand dollars. In pursuance of our conversation in Asheville I hope that you will indicate to me what your railroad will contribute. I wish to turn over the funds or definite promises for contributions to General Carr.
Please let me hear from you as soon as possible.
Yours sincerely,
[unsigned]
1. A copy of the press announcement was not found among the papers of Locke Craig. Most likely, he was referencing his press statement tasking Julian S. Carr with leading efforts to build a monument to Elisha Mitchell atop Mount Mitchell. See "General Carr Will Rebuild Monument," Asheville Citizen, 13 December 1916.
