COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION
R. G. Anders, Superintendent of Schools

His Excellency Lock Craige
Raleigh N.C.

Dear Governor Craige:

Why not, like the Governors of Missouri and Kansas, call upon all able bodied men in N.C. to give two days gratuitous labor with teams to the public roads in their respective counties, and all professional and business men who could not reasonably respond to such a call, add to the Township or County road fund a cash contribution equal to those who contribute labor. In those states referred to, millions of dollars were added to the roads in way of improvements, and I believe such a movement in N.C. would add incalculable value to the roads of the state and arouse interest where interest has not been awakened, and double the interest where it is already aroused. With best wishes always for you and yours and prayers for the success of your Administration, I am ever your friend,

(over)

P.S.

Believe me when I say that I am immensely interested in the fight you are leading for just Rail Road rates in N.C. I knew when you made the declarations you did in your Inaugural address that there was something "Dead up the branch" as the old negro said in his prayer; but never dreamed it was so bad until I have read from day to day in the News and Observer of the unjust dealings against N.C. I am sure you will not be content until all Cities and Citizens in the Old North State shall have ample justice
