SOUTHERN GOOD ROADS

LEXINGTON, NORTH CAROLINA

Governor Locke Craig,
Raleigh, N.C.

Dear Governor Craig:

I am in receipt of your letter of the 14th. and I have written to Mr. Mann and told him I trusted he could put the convicts on the Hickory Nut Gap road at once. Dr. Pratt called me up last Saturday and I told him the same. I shall be very glad to see this work begin.

Did you see my communication in Sunday's Charlotte Observer in reference to convicts? The Observer took issue with the Prison Board and I replied to it. There is no question in the world but what the sentiment of the state is practically unanimous against this policy, and the state is going to be compelled to stop it. I am sure that if the Council of State will co-operate with the Prison Board that it will stop.

I want you to remember Thomasville, and the first time that you have some good recognition to put out to hand it to Frank S. Lambeth.

Very truly yours,
