Sir,
His Majesty having been pleased to appoint Edmond Atkin Esqr., one of the Council of the Province of South Carolina, to be Agent for and Superintendant of the Affairs of the several Nations or Tribes of Indians, upon the Frontiers of Virginia, North and South Carolina, and Georgia, under the direction of the Earl of Loudoun, Commander in chief of His Majesty's Forces in North America; We think it Our Duty to acquaint you therewith, and to recommend it to you, to give him all proper Countenance and support in the Execution of a Commission, of so great Importance to the Welfare and Security of His Majesty's Colonies; and that nothing may be wanting to render it effectual, We desire you will consult and advise with him, in what manner the Affairs of the Indians may be best regulated, our Interest and Commerce with them most effectually supported and maintain'd, and the many and flagrant frauds and abuses, which have been too frequently committed in our Commercial dealings with them, prevented for the future: and in case you shall find it necessary to apply to the Council and Assembly for their Assistance and advice in a Legislative Capacity upon these points We do not doubt of their Zeal and readiness to concur in whatever may be necessary to promote His Majesty's Interest, and render Mr. Atkin's Commission effectual to the good purposes for which it is intended, particularly in making ample provision for presents, and such other contingent Expences, as are necessary to support and maintain our Interest amongst the Indians.
